  • Uncommon deformity of the chest wall, less common than pectus excavatum.

More frequent in whites

Uncommon in blacks and Asians.

  • Sex

Males affected 4 times more than females.

This deformity may occur either isolated or as part of a syndrome or conditions as scoliosis.

  • Age

It has been found at birth but most frequently identified in mid childhood. The deformity worsens during the adolescent growth spurt.

Types

It can be classified as either chondrogladiolar or chondromanubrial

  • chondrogladiolar:

Also known as chicken breast or keel chest

Protrusion of the middle and lower sternum

  • chondromanubrial:

Also known as Pouter pigeon breast

Protrusion of the manubrium and upper sternum (less common)
